6 Eugene-Area Tennis Players to Watch for in the 2024 Season

The high school tennis season is underway and plenty of Eugene-area players are looking to emerge. A pair of players who were state runners-up in Class 6A lead the list of girls tennis players to watch, while a singles player who was state runner-up as a freshman in Class 4A lead the list of boys players. Here are six of the top local players to watch this season.

Girls

Emerson Kearney, Sheldon senior

Emerson Kearney partnered with younger sister Hayden Kearney, now a sophomore, to finish as the Class 6A state runners-up at doubles last year. The duo will play together again for Sheldon and are using the loss as motivation for this season.

"For sure working on our fitness because we played three, three-set matches (at state)," Emerson said. "Obviously, they (opponents) played really well, but I think our fitness contributed to that and were able to outlast them. Definitely trying to stay consistent with all of our matches. Not getting super frustrated, staying positive."

Hayden Kearney said she is treating this season as "unfinished business" for the both of them.

"As the younger sibling, it's really motivating me to play well and perform well this year because it's my last year with her," Hayden said.

Alyssa Piquette, Sheldon sophomore

Alyssa Piquette will serve as the Irish's No. 1 singles again this season. She went 21-4 last year and qualified for the state tournament as a freshman.

Phoebie Larson, Marist sophomore

Phoebie Larson was the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A consolation runner-up with now-sophomore Stella Larson at doubles last year.

Boys

Ej Roedl, Marist sophomore

Ej Roedl finished as the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state runner-up in singles last year and was key to Marist's team title. The sophomore will play No. 1 singles while also playing on the lacrosse team for the Spartans.

Peyton Tyner, Marist senior

Peyton Tyner was the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state champion at doubles last year.

Andrew Forsyth, Marist senior

Andrew Forsyth was a consolation state runner-up at singles last year.
