Jonny Evans: Northern Ireland and Manchester United Defender Proves He Has More Miles in the Tank

Manchester United and Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans has "still got a few miles in the tank", says his international manager Michael O'Neill.

Speculation on Retirement

It had been speculated that the 36-year-old, who has won 106 NI caps, will retire at the end of the season. Evans rejoined United on a one-year deal in September.

Manager's Perspective

"Jonny and I have a really good relationship and we have had those conversations [about retirement]," O'Neill said. Speaking before Northern Ireland's friendly with Scotland on Tuesday, which Evans will miss through injury, O'Neill added: "I'll obviously try and talk him out of that scenario [retiring from football] but we'll obviously respect whatever decision Jonny makes."

Return to Manchester United

Eight years after leaving Old Trafford, Evans re-joined the club this season on a one-year deal after his contract with Leicester City expired. He had initially signed a short-term deal to cover pre-season but has made 24 appearances for Erik ten Hag's side, with 14 of those coming as starts.

Value to Club and Country

O'Neill added Evans, who is the fourth most-capped Northern Ireland player, still "brings a lot" to both club and country in a congested football calendar. "He has been a great player for me, he's been a great player for Northern Ireland, but I think he's still got a few miles in the tank yet. He brings a lot. He's not going to go out every week and play in the Premier League, but at a club like Manchester United where there is European competitions and cup football I think he's more than a useful player to keep around."
