With the Mets down 3-1 in the top of the eighth inning to the Milwaukee Brewers on Opening Day, the benches for both teams cleared after Rhys Hoskins slid into Jeff McNeil at second base, disrupting a could-be inning ending double play.

McNeil immediately showed his frustration with Hoskins and began shouting at him and the second base umpire for the slide and no-call.

Disruption at Second Base

With Hoskins at first base and one out, Willy Adames grounded one to third base where Brett Baty handled it and threw to McNeil at second to begin a double play. McNeil caught the ball, but was unable to throw to first and complete the double play after Hoskins slid into the bag late, which caught McNeil’s leg. McNeil was uninjured on the play, but was clearly not happy with Hoskins.

Challenge and Outcome

The Mets challenged the call, claiming Hoskins’ slide was illegal, but the play was not overturned and only one out was recorded. Reliever Michael Tonkin ended up getting the final out of the inning on a groundout to first base.

History Revisited

Hoskins, a former member of the Philadelphia Phillies, has some history with the Mets from 2019 when, after a ball was thrown over his head, he went deep and took his time running around the bases.
